Many people dread this time of year when we “spring forward” because it means one less hour of sleep. But I like to see it as an opportunity to kickstart a healthier fitness routine.
Did you realize the sunlight has a big impact on our bodies? There are two hormones that control mood and energy: Serotonin and Melatonin. Serotonin will help boost our mood and energy levels while melatonin will tend to make us feel sleepy. Too much of it can even lead to depression in some people. Winter depression is a common disorder and oftentimes tied to the effect of less daylight, less serotonin, and too much melatonin.
When there’s an abundance of sunlight, you will produce more serotonin and less melatonin. When sunlight is less available, you will produce less serotonin and more melatonin. The result of this can cause a dramatic shift in your overall feelings of well-being and energy; you will even find you have more energy and motivation when the days begin to lengthen.
This is a great time to Put the Longer Days to Work and Kickstart a Healthier Lifestyle!
Have you been struggling to work out? Lost your motivation? Less daylight may be the reason. Long-term fitness is the result of having a fitness routine and sticking with it. Once a habit becomes part of your life, it is easy to keep it up, even if your motivation and energy drop from time to time.
THIS IS THE PERFECT TIME TO BEGIN BUILDING HEALTHY EXERCISE HABITS!
Take advantage of the longer days and increased sunlight. As we get closer to spring and summer, the days will get longer and will give you more opportunity to work out. The increased serotonin in your body will boost your mood and energy, giving you the motivation to create an exercise routine. Get serious about this routine, so by the time fall rolls around you will be firmly entrenched in your healthy lifestyle.
Start today and develop a solid fitness habit to carry you through your entire lifetime.

I love this! I have a hard time adjusting to daylight savings time changes, but this is a great way to look at it. I hate going straight to the gym after work because it means coming home when it’s dark outside, so hopefully the longer day light will fix that! Thanks for the outlook change!
Thank you Emma – I purchased a full spectrum sunlight therapy light on Amazon which I have in my office. It really helps with the mood and I’m even a person that gets a lot of outdoor time. It’s something you may want to consider and it won’t break your bank! – Coach Connie PS: Let me know if you would like the link of the one I have
